If you can’t get enough of Marvel, superheroes, Star-Lord, and hit music from the ’70s and ’80s, then you’re going to love Epcot’s Guardians of the Galaxy — Awesome Mix Live! show. It’s the perfect entertainment for anyone visiting Disney World this summer.
The show debuted on June 9 (it runs until Aug. 19 at the America Gardens Theatre in the World Showcase) and I finally experienced it on June 19. I heard wonderful things about it beforehand and the positive reviews were certainly right. Awesome Mix Live! is enjoyable for both Guardians of the Galaxy fans and even those who’ve never seen the movies.
The show features Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana’s Gamora, Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel), and residents from Xandar, the fictional planet from the movies.
The audience watches as Star-Lord tries to save the galaxy from “bad music” by teaching the Xandarian Chamber Orchestra music from his awesome playlist, which includes songs from both soundtracks, Awesome Mix Volumes 1 & 2. Some of the songs performed are “Hooked on a Feeling”, “Come and Get Your Love”, and “Don’t Stop Me Now”.
It’s an, well, awesome range of music. If you’ve never listened to the Guardians soundtracks, you should really take time to do so. And, like the films, the show is funny and the actors portraying Star-Lord and Gamora are spot-on. They brought both Star-Lord’s sense of humor and Gamora’s fierceness to life perfectly.
You won’t be able to stop laughing at Star-Lord. Pratt would be proud of the actors playing Peter Quill. The actor I saw was hilarious and did a phenomenal job.
As for Gamora, Saldana would probably give her a round of applause. The actress I saw channeled Gamora’s fight and powerful spirit wonderfully. There’s also a great girl power moment featuring Gamora and two female Xandarians performing Pat Benatar’s “Hit Me With Your Best Shot”.
And, yes, Baby Groot also makes several appearances. He essentially serves as Star-Lord’s DJ and feeds music from his playlist to the stage at Epcot. He does his job very well.
If you won’t be able to watch the show in person, then you can check it out in its entirety here, courtesy of Attractions Magazine. But, if you are visiting Epcot this summer, make sure you budget time for Awesome Mix Live! It’s absolutely worth 20 minutes out of your day.
