Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios continues to transform into a very different park than most of us grew up knowing. From Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, to Toy Story Land, to now the addition of Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, the park made for film lovers is expanding in all kinds of unbelievable ways.
Here’s hoping the park doesn’t change too much in the future or that the old Hollywood vibe ever disappears, including my beloved Tower of Terror (stay away, Guardians of the Galaxy — Mission: Breakout!).
All that said, the new ride seems like a positive addition to the park. It’s even making Disney history (keep reading)! Who can argue with an attraction that stars none other than Mickey and Minnie and allows guests to step inside a cartoon starring the characters?
Seeing as the ride debuts very soon, let’s discuss what will certainly be yet another popular attraction at Walt Disney World. Here’s everything to know about Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway:
Where Is It?
The attraction is located inside the Chinese Theatre, located at the end of Hollywood Blvd.
What Is It?
As soon as guests step inside, they’ll immediately be transported into the cartoon world where they’ll embark on an adventure.
Upon being invited to watch a new Mickey cartoon, visitors will board a train with a very famous engineer named Goofy. The couple takes a leisurely drive to a picnic in their sporty roadster with Goofy following in his locomotive. The ride will take guests through a magical journey filled with twists and turns.
When Does It Open?
It opens at Walt Disney World on March 4, 2020.
Disneyland Park’s version of the attraction doesn’t open until 2022. The exact date hasn’t been revealed.
As for Disneyland’s version, it will be housed in Mickey’s Toontown and most of the action will take place at the El CapiTOON Theater, where Mickey and Minnie are premiering their newest short, “Perfect Picnic.”
Before entering the cinema, guests will also be able to walk through an exhibit created by the Toontown Hysterical Society featuring costumes and props from the cartoon world.
What Is It Replacing?
To the dismay of many guests, Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway is replacing The Great Movie Ride, which took it’s final bow on Aug. 13, 2017.
What Makes The Ride Special?
First, it has a trackless ride system. Both Rise of the Resistance and Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure (opens this summer at Epcot’s France pavilion) are trackless too.
Plus, a special piece of history is part of the ride. The train whistle that blows is the same exact whistle heard in Steamboat Willie (the first Mickey cartoon) is also used for the attraction’s locomotive.
Oh, and this is the very first ride-through attraction starring Mickey and Minnie! Can you believe that? The attraction tells a completely original story and even has its very own theme song.
If that isn’t enough, there are more hidden Mickeys here than any other Disney attraction or area in the world!

Is There A Height Requirement?
No, anyone can ride!
Is There A Standby Line?
Yes, there is a standby line and it will be open starting March 4, 2020.
What About FastPass+?
Yes, you can currently make FastPass+ bookings for the ride with selections starting on March 4, 2020.
If you can’t score a FastPass, then you’ll probably want to arrive as early as possible to the park. I’d say get to Hollywood Studios anywhere between 60 to 90 minutes before opening in order to get somewhat of a decent spot in the standby line. I will update with the best strategies after it opens.
Is It Open During Extra Magic Hours?
As of Feb. 6, 2020, it’s doesn’t look like Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway will be open during Extra Magic Hours. It’s also not included in the available attractions for EMH.
Who else can’t wait to step inside the cartoon world with Mickey, Minnie, and Goofy?
