Here is the latest Walt Disney World update you need to know called Disney MagicMobile.
If you plan on visiting the parks sometime in 2021 and after, you definitely need to learn about this latest digital service guests will soon have access to — especially if you’re not a fan of MagicBands.
What is Disney MagicMobile?
Essentially, MagicMobile is a contactless and complimentary way to access MagicBand features, like theme park entry.
So, if you don’t want to use a MagicBand, you can use MagicMobile through your iPhone, Apple Watch, or other smart devices.
You’ll simply create a Disney MagicMobile pass through the My Disney Experience app and then add it to your smart device’s digital wallet.
When can I use a Disney MagicMobile pass?
This service is first became available on Apple devices (iPhones and Apple Watches) on March 30, 2021.
Android users will be able to use MagicMobile by the end of April 2021.
How do I activate my MagicMobile pass?
The My Disney Experience app makes setting up your MagicMobile pass extremely easy.
That said, you must have either valid theme park admission or a Disney Resort hotel reservation linked to your account in order to use MagicMobile pass.
If you have that important step completed, then here’s all you have to do:
- You will open the My Disney Experience app.
- Then, click the three lines at the bottom of the screen, which will direct you to the main menu. the bottom right corner of the screen.
- Next, you will click the button reading “Disney Magic Mobile Pass.”
- Then, you will tap “Set Up Your Pass” and follow the on-screen instructions.
It only gets easier from here. You will then choose a design for your pass (see below an idea of choices). You can change the style as often as you’d like!
Finally, tap “Add to Apple Wallet.” Voila!
What features are available via MagicMobile?
Currently, there are only a few, but, per Disney, “MagicMobile features are launching throughout the year.”
These are the latest features available:
- Theme park entry (with valid theme park admission and a park reservation)
- Connecting Disney PhotoPass photos to your account (you will show your MagicMobile pass to a PhotoPass photographer to scan, just like you do with your MagicBand)
- Gain access to the virtual queue for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance (I believe this means once you’re able to enter the physical line, the Cast Member can scan your MagicMobile pass, like they do a MagicBand)
- Have scanned when checking into Disney’s Magical Express
- Charge purchases to your Disney Resort hotel folio (COMING SOON!)
There’s also “Express Mode,” which allows you to tap your phone near the entry touch points without unlocking your phone.
But, for family and friends linked to your account, you’ll have to open your digital wallet and redeem each pass individually.
What about sharing passes?
You can even “Select Passes to Share,” which simply means you can share your MagicMobile pass with members of your travel party.
As explained in the app, “Anyone that receives your shared pass will be able to add the pass to their Apple Wallet and use all of its linked entitlements.”
To clarify, you can only add party members you manage in your Disney account. At this time, you cannot add guests directly from your Family & Friends list to your MagicMobile pass.
As for sharing your pass with other members in your party, you can only do so through iMessage and recipients must have an iPhone and be in your address book or contact list.
You can also only have up to 11 MagicMobile passes added to your Apple wallet, but keep in mind that any credit cards, debit cards etc. already stored count towards the 11.
Can you reuse a MagicMobile pass?
Yes, you can reuse it every time you visit as long as you keep it in your Apple Wallet. And make sure your valid theme park admission and reservations are linked to your Disney account.
What does this mean for MagicBands?
If you’re a fan of MagicBands like myself, there is no need to worry. MagicBands aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.
You can choose to use the new service, use a MagicBand, or use a card-style ticket by alternating between the three options.
Back in June 2020, Disney announced that an “innovative new offering” would soon be launching as part of the My Disney Experience app.
The company also teased that this new feature would “bring features of a MagicBand to your smart devices, building on the app’s existing digital key feature.”
During this time, it was revealed that Disney would be “retiring” their complimentary MagicBand distribution to Walt Disney World Resort hotel guests.
The retirement of free MagicBands went into effect on Jan. 1, 2021 and are now listed at a special pre-order price of $5.
You can still reuse a MagicBand you already own or even purchase new ones at select retail locations on property and on shopDisney.com.
In other good MagicBand news, Disney shared on March 11 that they will release new MagicBand colors and designs sometime in the future.
What about the Digital Room Key and Key to the World card?
The existing digital room key feature that you can access via the My Disney Experience app is still available.
Disney Resort hotel guests can also continue to pick up a Key to the World card at their hotel’s front desk.
Disney MagicMobile definitely sounds like something non-MagicBand fans and those who tend to lose or forget their MagicBands will enjoy. Leave it to Disney to keep coming up with new technological development even when it comes to park entry.
I will update this post as more information is announced, so be sure to check back for the latest updates!
